Last Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks won against the Los Angeles Rams, with a score of 31 to 27. Meaning that the Seahawks are headed to the Super Bowl in February.

The Politics of it all
This could be the most politically contentious Super Bowl in its whole history. Trump and his followers are boycotting the Super Bowl. He recently announced he won’t attend the Super Bowl, in part because of the NFL’s choice of musical performers, saying they “sow hatred” and he is “anti-them”. He added the Santa Clara, California game is “just too far away” in an interview with the New York Post.
The Super Bowl will be opened by Green Day and Brandi Carlile. Green Day are a punk band lead by Billie Joe Armstrong, a bisexual man. They are a group that are known to make criticisms of Trump. Brandi Carlile, a Washington born lesbian country singer will perform “America the Beautiful”.
Bad Bunny, the headliner of the Super Bowl halftime show, has avoided touring the US in 2025 because he fears his Latino fans will be deported. This caused the Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to say ICE agents would be “all over the Super Bowl”.
Amidst all this, expect political banners to fly over the stadium during the Super Bowl since MoveOn has already flown an anti-ICE banner over the other NFL championship game, reading, “move.on.org/SuperBowl” which links to their petition to ban ICE from the Super Bowl.
Students’ Thoughts
When interviewed, most students said they didn’t know Sunday’s decisive game was happening, missing the event entirely. Dark Pauley said, “I heard the Seahawks won, but I don’t watch football.” The last time Pauley had watched a Seahawks game was three years ago, because his “dad made [him] watch it.” Pauley, like other students, knew that his dad was invested in the game and watched it attentively. The funniest response to the question of whether someone caught the game was in our newsroom; one of our own, Johanna Wilder said, “I watched my neighbors watch the game.”

Something for the History Books
This win is monumental for Seattle because of the Seahawks’ track record. This year, the Seahawks are ranked number one in their division , the NFC, something they have only ever achieved four times. They have only gone to the Super Bowl three times in their 50 year history and they have only won once in their 2014 game against the Denver Broncos.
After the 2014 Super Bowl victory, Seattle threw a huge parade. The victory parade drew over 700,000 fans and schools had a 25% absence rates because students went to the parade instead of class. So, professors, expect many absences if the Seahawks do win the Super Bowl on Feb. 8th.
Go ‘hawks!
