Delicate ceramic artifacts destined for holiday shoppers around the Shoreline community were featured at the 27th annual Holiday Sale, held recently on Nov. 29 and 30 in the Visual Arts Building 2000. On display were tables of contrasting color combinations that flourished over a variety of plates, bowls and Christmas ornaments. With prices ranging from $10 to $100, with a few $5 items, these handmade products attracted faculty, students and nearby community members.
According to the faculty advisor of the Clay Club, Matt Allison, “The Clay Club does this sale every year in order to raise money for the materials and events … the money to bring in workshops, to pay artists to come in and teach for a day, and buy materials.” The vast majority of the work was done by the students, but there were some pieces donated by local potters.
The president of the Clay Club, Wendi Hawley, described how students spent 40 to 50 hours in the quarter, from “glazing days, sanding days, pricing day,” to the final products for sale, reminding us of the time and care put into these rarities.
Stacie Attridge, a professor from SCC, showed us her haul of items. “I got this tiny little bowl, and then this bowl is pretty cool because it looks like it’s going to be really heavy but it’s really well-made so you could feel how light this is.” Her favorite purchase: a blue-patterned platter with flower-like curvatures. “I had to hold back, so I only got three things,” said Attridge.
The sale’s revenue will become the support system for future workshops of the Clay Club. Patrons this year made worthy purchases, contributing to the club’s future workshops and events for the entire year. “Last year we made $2,700, we’re hoping to break $3,000 this year,” stated faculty advisor Allison, adding that it was an educational experience for students who have never had an opportunity to sell their artworks, “to see what people look at and what they’re willing to pay.”
The Clay Club “meets every three weeks… in winter and spring the Clay Club is doing workshops,” said Allison. Club president Hawley confirmed a future workshop would be in April, showcasing an artist from Eastern Washington. “Anybody is welcome to the workshops we sponsor throughout the year.”
Perhaps one of their upcoming events would spark a desire to take up pottery yourself? Beginners are welcome in both the class and the Clay Club, Hawley said, and “It is not just the experienced students,” with artworks on sale, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Be sure to watch for the 28th annual Holiday Sale next year.
