On April 9, the yəhaw̓ Center for Student Empowerment (yCSE), along with screenwriting club Twenty Minute Productions, hosted an event celebrating women in honor of women’s history month, featuring filmmaker Lindy Boustedt. At the event itself, there was free pizza and snacks, a Kahoot quiz revolving around women in history, and the most important part was the showcase of Boustedt’s films.
The yəhaw̓ center had previously hosted events in the past month celebrating Women’s History Month, one of which was a bouquet making activity. On the center’s Instagram account, there were also posts and quizzes on women in history, most of which were used for the Kahoot quiz at the event itself.
A lot of Boustedt’s works which were screened were part of the Screenwriting for Healing, self-Actualization, Redemption & Empathy (SHARE) Screenwriting Program, which assists incarcerated women and youth adjust to life after release through filmmaking-related activities, such as the writing and directing of short films. The program has worked with juvenile detention centres in the state, such as Echo Glen Children’s Center, and the Washington Correctional Center for Women (WCCW) at Gig Harbor. Films from SHARE often focus on the lives of people in incarceration centers and the difficulty of reintegrating into society after prison.
Some of the films shown during the event were Please Understand, a short film about students at Echo Glen High School and Breathe, a story of a woman acclimating to life after her release.
