Don’t Struggle to Save

Natasha Sidik

Going to college isn’t cheap.

The nightmare of financial forms and late-night studying is something all too familiar. However, a number of economic benefits come with being a student. Everyone loves a good bargain, so might as well make the most out of that student ID.

Keep in mind that deals change from time to time. Old ones disappear, new ones pop up. Although the deals here are supposedly available throughout 2018, there’s no guarantee each stores still has the exact same deal.

Also, once 2018 ends, these may be gone. The good news is that there will always be a bargain for students lying around somewhere — the trick is being active and on the lookout for ‘em. Good luck and happy shopping.

Tech Trendies

Microsoft Office

Don’t pay for Microsoft Office products, at least, not as a student. If you’re looking into getting Excel or Powerpoint, Microsoft provides free products for students under the “Office 365 Education” bundle on the SCC website. Once downloaded, it’s all yours — even after graduating. Pretty neat, huh?

Spotify Premium + Hulu + Showtime

Unlimited music streaming? Check. A large collection of movies and TV shows? Check.

For $4.99 per month, this bundle gives you access to all of it.

As a side note, Apple Music’s unlimited streaming service also is $4.99 per month with a student ID. Remember that you only have four years of eligibility for this, but it doesn’t have to be continuous.

Special Mention: T-Mobile offers Netflix for free for those in a family plan with more than two people. Maybe you should stay on your parents’ plan so you don’t lose those cool benefits.

Apple Store

For avid Apple users looking into upgrading to a new Macbook, there’s good news: Apple offers macbooks for a cheaper price for students and incoming students (they take college acceptance letters).

Amazon Prime

Based in Seattle, Amazon offers fast and free deliveries exclusively to Prime users. After the free six-month long Prime trial, students may also continue their Prime subscription at the discounted price of $6.49 per month, as opposed to its regular price of $12.99 per month or $99 per year.

It’s Prime time to subscribe: the holidays are coming up and you don’t want to break the bank.

Adobe Creative Cloud

The design enthusiast inside of you will be delighted to learn that Adobe’s subscription (which includes Illustrator, Photoshop, and more) is discounted 60% from its regular monthly price. Also, SCC students who are taking Visual Communications Technology classes will receive a free Adobe subscription. Yay, discounts.

On Samsung’s website, purchases with a valid student email address will receive a handy 10% discount at checkout.

Entertaining Evenings

Regal Cinemas

Movie tickets are mad expensive these days. Fortunately, a number of Regal Cinema branches offer student discounts for the those who show their student ID. However, this is not applicable to online ticket purchases.

Every Thursday, AMC theaters hosts student specials with discounted ticket prices at varying locations as long as you bring a valid student ID. You and your friends or significant other can enjoy a cheap movie date.

Special Mention: Crest Movie Theatre

This theatre is close to SCC and a good place to check out if you don’t plan on venturing too far.

Located in the Shoreline neighborhood, this casual, family-based movie theatre plays older movies for the low price of $4.

School Supplies

Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores

‘Tis the season to make your own gifts because everything else is expensive. Jo-Ann’s student discount program offers a 10% discount on purchases and some other perks depending on the time of the year.

A current student ID can give you a 20% discount on shipping. We’re not so sure about handling, but hey: it’ll definitely be delivered.

Fashion Fun

UNiDAYS is a free membership program with a massive variety of online shop-exclusive discounts offered. H&M, Adidas, PacSun, American Apparel, Levi’s, Champion, New Balance and ASOS are just some of the well-known fashion options they offer.

These offers change from time to time, so it may be a good idea to check in on them once in a while.

Another free membership you can join is Student Beans. Students receive special offers as long as they sign up for this app with their SCC email. Some of their online store options include TopShop, Hot Topic and La Senza.

Among the two free membership programs, UNiDAYS appears to cater more towards U.S. students, due to most of its American-based brands, as opposed to Student Beans’ which offers deals for a number of UK stores as well.

They offer a similar deal as Nike’s online store, but with a 20% discount instead.

Seattle Scenes

Seattle Repertory Theatre

Students get a discount on single tickets here, so be on the lookout for performance schedules for the season.

A personal recommendation is “In the Heights.” If you’re familiar with Lin-Manuel Miranda from the recent “Hamilton” boom, this is also an award-winning musical he was involved with years beforehand.

Seattle Opera

All the Seattle Opera performances offer a rush program for students, lowering a single ticket price to a mere $25. It may not be the type of entertainment you want every weekend, but operas are definitely a unique experience.

Japanese Garden

A scenic nature-filled walk around this beautiful area will be an even better experience knowing that as a student you get a 50 percent discount on ticket prices. There’s specific monthly days where you can get in for free.

Seattle Art Museum

Students with a current student ID card get $10 off the regular adult entrance fee.

Special mention: TeenTix
