Fantasy Football Round Up
January 20, 2017
By Katen Burgess
By the time The Ebbtide picks back up after winter break, the Fantasy Football season will be over, except for Dynasty, for which there is no offseason. We wanted to take a look back at the players we’ve written about over the last few weeks. This will be a look back at the kind of analysis we’ve provided this season and to update their status for the upcoming fantasy football playoffs.
Week 6
Sammy Watkins, WR, Buffalo Bills
Status: Start him if you got him
Watkins had his coming out party this week after spending most of the season on IR. He caught all three of his targets for 80 yards, despite only playing 50 percent of the Bills’ offensive snaps. 62 of those 80 yards came on one reception, but that’s the big-play upside that makes Sammy such an attractive fantasy asset. If Sammy can get off the snap count look out, not only is he a big-time playmaker, he’s a bigtime playmaker on a team with few other options, so Buffalo will be force-feeding him the ball.
Donte Moncrief, WR, Indianapolis Colts
Status: Start him if you got him
Moncrieft made his way back after missing six weeks with a fractured scapula, and has scored a touchdown every week since. Even after last Thursday on a short-week without starting QB Andrew Luck, Moncrief is a fantasy powerhouse that cannot be denied.
Sammie Coates, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers
Status: Why haven’t you already dropped him?
Coates has two broken fingers, so it’s no wonder he’s been unable to catch the last 12 passes that’ve been thrown his way since Week Nine. I wouldn’t be very productive at my job with two broken fingers, especially if my job was catching footballs.
Week 8
Devontae Booker, RB, Denver Broncos
Status: Flex or RB2 depending on your roster
Since receiving the starting role after CJ Anderson’s designation to IR, Booker has scored once per week. Unfortunately, four of those came in the first two weeks he had the starting job, and he has yet to score since. He’s still getting the bulk of the carries, and seeing some work in the passing game; two of his touchdowns actually came on pass plays. Booker is an RB2/Flex, but definitely worth rostering given the lack of true starters at the running back position.
Davante Adams, WR, Green Bay Packers
Status: Start him if you got him
There’s a chance Adams has returned to Earth, after being held out of the endzone in back to back weeks, but the odds are that he’s for real. He’s on pace for 1,000 yards and 10 TDs. At his current pace that means he’s going to score four touchdowns and nearly 400 yards over the last four weeks of the season.
Jack Doyle, TE, Indianapolis Colts
Status: Solid streaming option, hopefully you don’t have to roster him
Doyle put up some good weeks, but his value was tied to being a big red zone target for Andrew Luck and flying under the radar while the Colts’ one-two punch of Hilton and Moncrief at WR demanded defense’s attention.
Tyreek Hill, WR, Kansas City Chiefs
Status: Depth play
Hill was the WR3 on a run-first offense until Jeremy Maclin injured his groin in Week Nine. In that time Hill’s shown up as a playmaker. With five TDs and almost 500 yards receiving, Hill has been a major waiver wire target this season and it will be interesting to see where he’s valued going into the 2017 season.
Rob Kelley, WR, Washington Professional Football Team
Status: Must-start
Kelley’s gotten a reputation as an efficient RB who relies solely on the volume that Jay Gruden’s playbook demands, but 4.7 yards per attempt seems pretty efficient to me. Since taking over the bulk of the carries in Washington in Week Eight, “Fat Rob” is averaging 90 yards and a touchdown per game. Granted, his TD average is inflated by his absolutely huge three-TD game against the Packers in Week 11, but even still, he’s a must-start RB going into the fantasy playoffs.
Week 10
CJ Prosise, RB, Seattle Seahawks
Status: Droppable, maybe next year.
Prosise looked great before injuring his shoulder. We wish him a speedy recovery. Go Hawks.
Christine Michael, RB, Green Bay Packers
Status: I don’t even know man, what do you think I am, a fortune teller?
According to Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy, C-Mike is apparently up the offense “really fast” as reported by Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The hype train lives on! C-Mike only managed one carry last week, but we’ll see how things turn out!
Cameron Brate, TE, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Status: Viable streaming option
Brate has scored five TDs and almost 500 yards this season. He’s catching passes from one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the league in Jameis Winston. The Bucs’ remaining matchups aren’t against any top defenses, including two games against New Orleans who are ranked 18th out 32 in touchdown passes allowed.
Taylor Gabriel, WR, Atlanta Falcons
Status: Potential flex starter
Gabriel caught four TDs for 271 yards over the last four weeks. He’s got a catch percentage of 72 percent, according to Pro-Football-Reference.com and scored a rushing touchdown. That’s an impressive line, but he’s one of many targets on the high-powered Falcons offense. I wouldn’t be comfortable with him as anything higher than a WR4 or flex start.
