The Associated Student Government (ASG) typically holds meetings from 3-5 p.m. on the first and third Monday of every month. This meeting was on Jan. 29 in the boardroom of the 1000 Building. Students may attend if they would like to meet their representatives or voice an issue. In addition, students may meet with their representatives in the Student Life Office on the third floor of the PUB on most weekdays. The next meeting will be Feb. 12.

Recognition

YouToo Club

The YouToo Club was recognized as a club.

The goal is to share the college student experience and bring awareness to the opportunities that SCC’s other clubs have to offer. They plan to promote student life by taking and posting videos on social media. The club is structured in such a way as to support other clubs.

They plan to meet on Fridays from 2-3 p.m., with a location still yet to be determined.

Enigma

An enigma also got recognized. New student Long Phan started the club to solve puzzles; the official title for the club is “Enigma,” which definitely makes one’s ears perk up upon hearing it.

Phan wants to make a place for anyone who is interested in logic, riddles and games. He even brought a bag of little wooden brain games to the ASG meeting and passed them out to the board members. Phan hopes to award prizes to members who solve the fastest and thinks his club would be great for people interested in math, engineering or the arts.

Meetings are planned for 2-4 p.m. on Thursdays in Room 9102 of the PUB.

Mini Grants

CEO Club

Three different mini grant requests were combined into one. First, the CEO Club requested $232 for snacks as an enticement mechanism to increase the turnout for their weekly meetings. Second, they made a bid of $402 to cover pizza, drinks and plates for their end of quarter celebration of students completing CEO101 or BUSTC109.

The club’s inner tubing trip to Snoqualmie Summit was the final item discussed. The club requested $768 to cover transportation for the 127-mile round-trip journey, tubing tickets and six pizzas for 20 students and two chaperones.

With the potential of fundraising in mind, the ASG decided to give half of the requested amount.

Japanese Culture Club

Requesting $516 for a trip to visit the Grand Tsubaki Shrine (the first of its kind in North America), no members were present when they were called.

Math Club

The Math Club wants to host an educational workshop featuring speakers from UW to talk about their experiences transferring to UW from SCC.

Ruiyu Qu, president of the Math Club, made a proposal which would have recent SCC alumni coming to campus from 12:30-2 p.m. on Feb. 13 to speak in the Main Dining Room. Qu had expected a representative from UW to help make the proposal, but they couldn’t make it due to the weather.

The request was tabled until next meeting.

Multicultural Center

Director of Student Life Rezina Habtemariam present­ed what has become a yearly proposal for the Multicultural Center. SCC annually sends a delegation of students to the Students of Color Conference in Yakima, WA.

This year, 22 students along with three mentors will attend the event, sharing experiences through discussions with other students from colleges around the state. The confer­ence focuses on identity devel­opment, social justice and social activism, with students giving presentations and attending a variety of work­shops.

Habtemariam said that the conference is intended to give students who embody a mar­ginalized identity the chance to have a conference geared toward them and their specific struggles. The SCC organi­zations sending students to the conference are the Black Student Union, Muslim Stu­dent Association and Filipino- American Student Associa­tion.

After some debate it was decided that Student Life would step in to cover part of the cost, which includes registration and two nights at the hotel.

The conference will take place April 12-14.

VCT Club

The final mini grant request saw two members of the Visual Communications Technology Club, Robin Oliver and Janejira Damron, ask for funds for a project in May. The VCT Club Portfolio Show serves as the centerpiece event of the year and gives members the chance to show their work to professionals in the industry.

Having prepared their request early, the club had a detailed plan for use of their funds. With certain portions of the budget fixed, the ASG decided to approve the club’s requests for those portions and tabled the remaining request for the marketing budget. There was still some question about how much money the posters, flyers, invitations for selected companies and postage would cost, so the ASG decided to postpone a verdict on that portion of the budget until more information could be obtained.
