Truth be told, our library’s website looks unappealing to students’ creative eyes at its current state.
The library website has been a part of Shoreline Community College for a long time, yet despite this, it has undergone a very small amount of changes throughout its life cycle and it isn’t merely the lackluster design but also the lack of several features in its functionality. The result of this is the lack of use as students would rather search in other databases or head straight to Google. This dormancy of the website is the primary reason why the UX/UI Design Cafe Club is working toward completely revamping the library website.
The primary issues with the library are both its design and functionality. The design of the library’s homepage right now needs a variety of colors, shapes, and icons to help it give more life.
However, the design of the library is only a small issue, the largest issue at hand is the need for more convenience features. For starters, the website needs a portal that allows students and faculty alike to access Canvas directly and simply from the website. This is because as most of you know, Canvas is the main way students do their assignments, access class information, and study overall.
Another lackluster thing on this website is the live librarian chat, the database search tabs, and the feedback forms. Even though these icons aren’t missing from the website, they are located at hard to find positions and impractical spots.
Although, there is no need to worry. Students need not wait much longer now for a better website, as the UX/UI design cafe club along with Lauren Bryant, one of SCC’s librarians are working hard to resolve the matter together.
Bryant has been one of SCC’s librarians for 10 years and she too recognizes the key features and eye-catching design missing from the library website. She was also responsible for the website redesign last year which older students may have noticed, yet even though the current website has its improvements, it is still far from perfect. For this reason, the UX/UI cafe is working day and night to gather ideas from its members and students from SCC alike for a better website.
As we wait for the website to be redesigned, students can help by joining the UX/UI design club to give creative and helpful inputs as well as work together with existing members.
To join the club, there are posters with a QR code that will take you to a form to join, or you can use the link posted in their Instagram account at @uxcafe_scc. Even if you aren’t a member of the club, you can still pitch in ideas by filling out the feedback form on the website.
As Bryant herself said, “The UX/UI Design club wants to hear ideas from the students of Shoreline Community College.”
Every feedback and idea helps in the long run. In this club students don’t just work but also engage with one another in fun activities. An upcoming activity the UX/UI design club is planning to do this quarter is to do an escape room with all of its members. Said activity will for sure help the members work as a team and help members have fun. Therefore, if you’re interested in joining don’t hesitate as the club welcomes all students.
