Located next to the PUB (Building 9000), the 7000 Campus Living building is called home by dozens of students. Dorm life shapes the experience of Shoreline Community College’s on-campus residents, who hail from a variety of in-state, out-of-state, and international origins.
Living on campus has clear advantages for some. “Living in the dorms makes it easier to make friends and stay involved on campus. The best part is the convenience of being close to classes,” said Anton Nguyễn, a current resident.
From events within the dorm lounge to a myriad of campus-wide activities and clubs, an abundance of social opportunities are available to on-campus residents. Many residents also express a sense of safety in the dorms due to 24-hour patrols visibly active around campus.
“They provide furniture and a bed, plus utilities and Wi-Fi, which makes settling in much easier,” said resident Falco Richmond. He considers the building clean and reports often seeing janitors in the hallways.
Conversely, a lack of maintenance and cleanliness has troubled other students in the dorms. Prospective occupants are charged a $200 cleaning fee, yet multiple residents have reported stained carpets, broken fixtures, loose baseboards, and damaged doors upon moving in. Resident Sofia-Marie Castillo said, “My roommate and I ended up cleaning everything ourselves because we didn’t feel it was done properly.”
Some residents have reported noisy late-night parties on Fridays that interfere with their focus and rest, and others have lamented a potent smell of cannabis or other substances.
College life is meant to cultivate personal and academic growth, social connections, and lasting memories. Whether dorm life is exemplary or less than ideal, it is certain to be an adventure, filled with unique experiences.
