The Associated Student Government (ASG) is a collective group of students who represent the entirety of Shoreline Community College students. They are responsible for establishing policies and setting priorities on campus, as well as in charge of running events and providing services to fellow students to aid them in their academic careers.
The President of the ASG is expected to represent the student government and act as the primary representative voice of all students, providing leadership by supporting the other ASG officers and members and working with them to execute the duties of their positions. They also meet with the College President and provide reports to the Board of Trustees about the student experience at Shoreline.
This year’s election we had two very ambitious and determined candidates: Jason Chan and Liz Ho.
Whether it was making funny and appealing videos on social media or handing out posters and flyers throughout campus, each candidate showed tremendous efforts during their campaigns. Both addressed solid and virtuous visions, missions, qualities, and points with intentions to pursue a better quality of life on campus for the students, by the students.
However, like any election, only one winner will arise by the end of the day.
After a tremendous campaign from both sides and a week of voting lasting from May 1 until May 10, the long wait is over.
Candidates were notified of the unofficial results on May 10 and were given until May 13 to appeal the results. As no appeals were filed, the results stand.
By a narrow margin of six votes, 85 to 79 — the winner and the new 2024-2025 Associated Student Government President is Liz Ho.
Liz is a Political Science and Philosophy student from Hong Kong who aims to pursue a career in law. As the president of ASG, she aims to make “positive contributions” and foster an overall “better study environment and enrich the experience in Shoreline.”
She intends to provide different opportunities to aid students with their social life. One of her many ideas was planning “outdoor events” for international and domestic students to meet up and socialize with one another. In addition, she plans to implement more academic-related activities in aiding students’ transfers and plans such as “transfer workshops” or “transfer talks.”
“I will surely bring up and foster a better environment and community for the Shoreline students. I hope that Shoreline is not only a place that can provide education but also a place to teach us to thrive,” Ho said.
