Apart from a good night’s rest, there are few better ways to start a morning than with a warm mug of coffee or a freshly brewed cup of tea. To enjoyers of coffee and tea at SCC, the annual International Coffee and Tea tasting beckons.
Every year around mid-November, SCC hosts an International Education Week. This year’s festivities lasted from Nov. 18 through Nov. 22, and each day brought one or two events catered to international students and hosted by the department of International Education.
The International Coffee and Tea Tasting occurred in the lobby of the PUB (Building 9000) on Nov. 19 and ran for two hours, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 10:30 a.m. Students, staff, alumni, and even family were invited to sample coffee, tea, and snacks from many countries and cultures around the world. Each stand was represented by students or staff who shared information on their respective cultures and the drinks and snacks popular within them.
“How could you pass on this free coffee?” said an astonished Michael Overa, an English professor and head of the Honors College.
An anonymous student said the event was “really fun and engaging, as it opens my mind to new cultures and their delicacies.”
Nanami Yoshida, a representative of Japan, said she felt truly grateful to be given the chance to present Japan’s delicacies to the whole campus.
Hong Kong representative Jason Chan said he was “here because my girlfriend is here.”
Those who missed this year’s Coffee and Tea Tasting may attend the repeat planned next year, anticipated to represent even more cultures.
