Books to Prisoners
All winter quarter, SCC Library
The Ray Howard Library is having a book drive, teaming up with Books to Prisoners, a “Seattle-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster a love of reading behind bars, encourage the pursuit of knowledge and self-empowerment, and break the cycle of recidivism.” Especially needed are dictionaries, sci-fi, fantasy, books of cultural significance, Westerns, Spanish/English dictionaries and GED study books.
Donations can be made in the library or on the third floor of the PUB.

President’s Day
Feb. 20
Celebrate our first and 16th presidents by not drinking tea and by paying your employees a fair wage. Or just spend it in your pajamas bingeing “The West Wing.” However you choose to honor George and Abe, do it somewhere else, because campus is closed.
Spindrift Deadline

The deadline is here for written pieces, including the first acts of plays and musical scores. Visual art pieces were due Jan. 31.

Last Chance for Grading Changes
Feb. 22
Today is the last day that “W” grades will be issued. It’s also the last day to say, “No, no, no, I was actually auditing the class the whole time!” Alternatively, it’s also the last day to decide anyway, since you’ve been doing all the work for that class you’re auditing that you might as well get some credit for it.
Creative Writing Workshop

Shoreline + UW/JSIS -> The World: A Discussion of Ah-ha Moments

Roughly one-third of SCC graduates every year go on to four-year institutions that send them into careers in international work in places like Seattle, Olympia, Washington D.C. and beyond. Alexis Chouery and Simon Walker (SCC class of 2012), along with Ian Waller (SCC class of 2014), return to where it all started to share and discuss stories about their education, careers and some “ah-ha” moments they experienced along the way.
Auto Leaks Inspection Workshop
6-10 p.m., Feb. 23 & March 2, Automotive Building
Get an inspection from a certified automotive instructor. Learn how to prevent and identify future leaks on your own and receive a free vehicle maintenance kit. Save the Earth, your car and your wallet.
Advisers Out and About

Spring registration begins next Monday. SCC advising staff will be at tables set up in the library and PUB. They can help you figure out your SID & PIN, tell you when it’ll be your turn to register, help you make a plan for course selection, look at classes, assist in creating a schedule, learn about pre-reqs, and discuss payment options and financial aid. Got Your 6 Training Opportunity: Military Sexual Trauma
1-3 p.m., March 1, PUB, Room 9208, Quiet Dining Room
Kimberly Hardy, project director for the Veterans Training & Support Center, will discuss familiarization with military culture, how military sexual trauma is defined, how it occurs in a military culture context and how to address the difficulties exposed as a result. This training counts toward your “GOT YOUR 6” designation.
Peru’s History, Culture, and Place in the World

Miguel Angel Velasquez, Peru’s honorary consul general to Washington state since 1997, will discuss Peru’s history, culture and geography, as well as the importance of Peruvian-Washingtonian relations.
