Student Positions Face Furloughs Amid COVID Concerns

As SCC transitioned to virtual learning to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus, the college also moved a number of traditionally in-person services online.  Due to that lack of on-campus presence, a number of student held jobs now face furloughs.

SCC’s Ray Howard Library adapted to the changes and now offers video chatting services with limited hours. In previous quarters, the library offered a Library Assistant position for student employment. That position has been furloughed for the remainder of spring quarter.

“It’s been stressful not having a steady source of income and not knowing what kind of jobs will be available in the future ” said Marissa Hoffman, a Library Assistant and SCC student.

In April nationwide unemployment rose to 23.1 million people. Education and health services made up 2.5 million of those claims.

SCC continues to offer work-study positions that can be conducted using web services, such as tutoring and student government. However, the college has furloughed positions that require the job to be performed in person, such as recreation aide, event cashier and computer lab aide.
