Pickleball, a fun and engaging sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, has been rapidly gaining popularity for its friendly competition and social atmosphere. Shoreline’s pickleball club started just last year and has since searched for ways to introduce the entertaining sport to the community. In an effort to recruit new members and promote pickleball on campus, the club hosted an Open House on Nov 2.
Around 40 students and faculty members attended the event hosted at the campus gymnasium (Building 3000). The gym was divided into eight courts, each accommodating four players. From 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., students of all experience levels were welcomed with snacks, music, and equipment to enjoy time together playing pickleball.
Some students had the opportunity to play against others of the same level. “Meeting pickleball lovers was the highlight of the event,” stated Jackie Chan, who also shared excitement about the pickleball tournament scheduled for spring 2025.
Instructor Stacie Attridge gave beginners guidance on how to properly hold the paddle, serve, stand, and navigate the court. To advanced players, she provided tips on how to improve their techniques and strategies while playing. Kevis Leung, the club president, also accommodated students based on their skill levels.
“It was the first time I played pickleball, so interacting with other players as a beginner was fun,” described Atanu Baishnab.
The club held a raffle at the Open House, giving attendees the chance to win a free pickleball set. Students wrote down their names on square pieces of paper, and after the event was over, the lucky name was drawn and shared on Instagram stories. Melody, a PE student incentivized by her instructor to attend the event, scored two paddles, balls, and a case for storage.
“Experience the excitement of pickleball and make new friends – come to our next meet,” President Leung encouraged. The club offers an open invite to all who’d like to play and learn to join their meetings on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the main gym.
