A new quarter has just started, and that calls for brand new activities. After a handful of sports clubs, SCC finally reveals a club for all the combat and martial art lovers. Since the beginning of the year, SCC’s very first boxing club called “Shoreline’s Boxing Club” has been in the works.
During Shoreline’s club fair in January the boxing club made its debut. Multiple students found interest, as their booth with all the boxing gloves and pads displayed caught people’s attention. The club had signup sheets and by the end of the day they were overflowing with prospective members. Stacie Attridge, said club’s advisor, stopped by and was delighted to see the rapid progress and hype the booth was getting.
“We were so excited for what’s to come,” marketing head, Celine Chandra said.
Just this February, the first session began and it took place in the Music Building, Room 815. Expectations were high, but worries soon came as the team realized how small the music room was. It seemed unfitting to host a boxing session in a music room as they needed something more spacious.
“Getting the approval to create a club takes time because there are so many things to get done before getting approved. You have to find an advisor, fill out forms, find the right team and the hardest of all — find a space that’s right,” club founder Juan David said when interviewed about the process.
After some obstacles and a few meetings with Jisa Kang, an audio specialist in the music building who keeps tabs on the club, Juan David finally managed to secure the gym. With Kang lended a helping hand, David felt as if the club deserved a more appropriate setting to host boxing sessions.
Now a new chapter for the boxing club begins, meeting every Monday and Wednesday fromat 4 to 6 p.m at the SCC Gym Hall.
“People should join because I believe boxing has interpreted some soft skills that I find has had a positive impact in my life and I hope others will also feel the same way about boxing. This sport changed my life and I’m sure it will change others’ too for the better,” Juan David said regarding his motivations.
For those curious about how it specifically changed his life, he says,
“Back in high school I was often bullied by my upperclassmen because I was small and shy. I didn’t have confidence in myself and never backed myself up. Then I was introduced to boxing. This was when my life went on an upward spiral.”
He sensed that it was necessary for him to stand up for himself, instead of letting himself get tossed around. He wants to emphasize and let it be known to everyone that having and increasing self respect is important.
“Boxing made me believe in myself and gave me the confidence that I really needed. It gave me a reason to stay disciplined every day which then improved my daily routine.”
Additional boxing benefits to really fuel your interest include:
- Improves heart health
- Aids weight loss
- Boosts whole body strength
- Improves balance
- Decreases stress
- Lowers blood pressure
There is no reason to not come by, don’t be shy to stop by the club. It is a space for everyone to grow into their best self, to have fun and meet new people with similar hobbies.
“The shortcut to life is to never miss a day because sometimes there are lucky days and those lucky days will come if you never miss a day,” said Juan David.
