Shoreline Community College was honored to host Brady Henderson, the Seattle Seahawks writer for ESPN to campus. Henderson was invited to speak about his career and recount how he became the sole ESPN writer for the Seahawks in Seattle.
He spent most of his time describing his life and the paths he took to get the position he is in today. Both of his parents worked for The Seattle Times, which provided Henderson with exposure and an early desire to become a journalist when he grew up.
“Both of my parents were journalists, they worked at The Seattle Times for many years … I spent a lot of time in the newsroom growing up.”
It was beneficial and inspiring to hear the path of someone who’s had such success in their field of work. Brady Henderson explained how students should be ready for any opportunity that is open to them.
“When an opportunity comes your way, be ready for it, take advantage of it”.
As he retold the story of his career, he explained that he got the job he has today, because he took advantage of an opportunity.
“They already had the person they were gonna hire, so I was too late, but they had to move that person out from Philadelphia and there was gonna be a 2-3 week gap.. They needed someone to fill in that gap… I treated those weeks like a job interview, knowing I’d be at the top of their list — the job came open and they called me to have me interview for it,” Henderson explained.
Brady Henderson took this opportunity and didn’t look back. This is why he wants people to be proactive with every situation. If he didn’t reach out to the editor who was hiring, he would never be at the spot he is at today. Henderson’s visit to SCC provided valuable insights about the world of journalism and the importance of seizing rare opportunities.
