The email with the votation was sent last week to all SCC students, staff, faculty, and some community members. It includes a short two-question survey, plus a breakdown of the main arguments for and against the change.
So… why now?
The college is going through major updates — like the Cedar Building opening, the new Bracken Building under construction, and the launch of our first bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. Because the campus will get new signage anyway, this moment offers a chance to consider changing the name without big extra costs.
Some arguments in favor of dropping “Community” include:
– “Shoreline College” sounds more modern and easier to remember
– It may attract more international students and bachelor’s-level students
– Most of the local colleges have already made similar changes
On the other hand, arguments against include:
– We’ve been known as a community college for 60 years—this is part of our identity
– Most students are still not in bachelor’s programs
– It might make us seem less affordable or less connected to the local community
You might think, “Why vote? I’m just one person,” but your voice matters. If you don’t give your opinion, others will decide for you—and after that, you don’t get to complain.
Remember, even President Kahn seemed unsure about this change when asked in a past article why the college is allowed to make it. This shows how important student input is right now.
Voting is open until Thursday, Apr. 24 at 8 a.m. So don’t wait!
The Ebbtide staff already voted. Now it’s your turn. Find the email and click to vote, then tell us what you think in the comments or on our Instagram @theebbtide.
Let’s be part of the decision—not just the result.
