Sometime between midnight and around 3am, Sgt Gregory Cranson of the Campus Safety & Security Department suspects, on the morning of Feb. 2, an unknown person entered the campus from the Greenwood Avenue entrance and spray-painted anti-pornography slogans on campus facilities, starting with the pump house at the entrance to the Greenwood Ave. parking lot.
From there, they ascended the Greenwood stairway to tag the back wall of the Gym 3000 building, the back of the Tesla maintenance school in the 2900 building, and finally the wall of the brand new Cedar 6000 building, before disappearing into the Shoreview Park trails, unseen.
At about 3:30 a.m. campus security spotted the vandalism and the call went out to remove it and search for the culprit. SCC officials responded, alerting facilities management who dispatched workers to paint and pressure-wash affected areas. By noon, only faint traces remained.
Before classes met for the day, Cat Chiappa of Communications & Marketing broadcast a message alerting students and faculty who might potentially view and be disturbed by the messages. In an email to The Ebbtide, Sgt. Cranson credits the facilities department, groundskeeping, custodial and maintenance for the quick cleanup, by “constantly go[ing] above and beyond to keep this campus functioning.”
No suspects have been identified. The case was referred to Shoreline Police/King County Sheriff’s Department.
