The block fair held on Thursday, October 3rd offered the opportunity to learn about over 20 departments and programs on campus. In the courtyard outside of the PUB building, both new and current students alike were invited to peruse Shoreline Community College’s services and determine which will best aid them in their college education.
Friendly representatives occupied the stands, ready to chat with students and convey what their facility can provide them. The library was an especially notable department at the fair; their team ensures students have access to life-changing resources, including the Student Learning Center, tutoring, and a comprehensive variety of free books to check out.
Other prominent departments at the fair include On-Campus Living (in Building 7000), the Music department, the Multicultural Center, and the Asian and Pacific Islander Student Center.
Below is a summary of all the departments and programs that were held in the block fair:
1. Library (The 4000 Building, [email protected], (206)-533-2548)
The SCC library is an on-campus facility that provides students with a safe learning environment and free facilities, including book checkouts, printers, USB drives, charging cables, and even rental laptops! Request a book form: (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/66MDDB2 ).
2. Student Learning Center (The 4000 Building. [email protected]. (206) 546-4776). The best place to go for tutoring on STEM subjects excluding biology and computer science, and the writing studio for English-related problems is located on the 3rd floor.
3. King County Library ((425) 462-9600)
You can check out novels, textbooks, movies, comics, manga, and more at all 48 libraries and return them to any library within the system. An online library system is available for those interested in virtual reading. All you need is a library card, which you can register for within one of these 48 libraries!
4. Elearning Center (Room 4228, [email protected]. (206)-546-6966)
A place where students can get help related to Canvas or the various online services SCC provides.
5. Asian and Pacific Islander Student Center (Room 1305, [email protected], (206) 533-6661)
The WAVES or Asian and Pacific Islander Student Center is a program that promotes student success and welcomes all students at SCC, not just Asians and Pacific Islanders. Here, students can learn more about Asian culture and participate in lively events like karaoke nights!
6. The Ebbtide (Room 9101 [email protected])
The Ebbtide, SCC’s student-run newspaper aims to inform you of all the hot topics relevant to Shoreline Community College and the local area. Students are free to visit every Monday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:20 p.m.
7. SCC Foundation (Suite 1005, [email protected], (206) 546-4755)
The SCC Foundation is a service that allows students to apply for annual and quarterly scholarships. You need only visit their website and create an account in AwardSpring. Afterward, your information will be used to determine which scholarships you are eligible for.
8. Student Life (Room 9301, [email protected], (206) 546-5862)
The Student Life is an organization of staff and student employees whose job is to assist students in creating clubs or minigames.
9. Counseling Service (Room 5251, (206) 546-4594 [email protected]) Students seeking advice about anything related to schoolwork, relationships, career ideas, and managing stress can visit counselors located in the FOSS Building.
10. Study Abroad (Room 9302, [email protected], (206) 546-4594)
This program offers the opportunity for students to study abroad in different countries for a certain duration, usually for a quarter or half a quarter.
11. Benefits Hub (Room 9102, [email protected], (206) 546-5845)
The Benefits Hub helps students with ongoing issues in housing, security, finance, and food. On and off-campus resources are offered. They have a food pantry, clothes, and hygiene products that students can take for free or contribute donations to.
12. Music Department (Room 807, [email protected], (206) 546-7632)
The music department has opportunities for students who are interested in and/or majoring in music. They host ensembles and bands that anyone can join.
13. Gender Equity Center (Room 9202, [email protected], (206) 546-4715)
The gender equity center promotes understanding and advocating for gender-based issues. The center primarily supports women, transgender, and gender non-conforming students. It also has a center for health and wellness items that students may take for free.
14. Student Accessibility Services (Room 5226, [email protected], (206) 546-4545)
The student accessibility service provides disabled students support and accommodations both on and offline.
15. Workforce Education (Room 5101, [email protected], (206) 546-5882)
The workforce education offers financial aid and helps pay for students’ tuition, transportation, and school supplies. Qualifications for this program include but are not limited to Washington state residency, participation in the food stamps program, and unemployment. The workforce education program also helps with professional technical degrees and can pay for transfer degrees.
16. Multicultural Center (Room 9201, [email protected], (206) 533-6618)
The Multicultural Center is a joint club of all cultures at Shoreline Community College. Here, students from many cultures gather together to host events based on culture or just hang out with one another for fun.
17. Career Center (Room 9203, [email protected], 206-546-5821)
The Career Center helps students develop career plans. They can help you create resumes and cover letters and find jobs and internships through the app Handshake.
18. Athletics and intramurals (Main Gym, [email protected])
Athletics and intramural sports are available to all students and staff; SCC’s open gyms offer sports like badminton and basketball. The center is normally open from Monday to Thursday.
19. Transitional studies (Room 5205, [email protected], (206) 705-8725)
The transitional study is a program designed to help people adjust to college life and academics.
20. 7000 Campus Living ([email protected], (206) 542-8779)
7000 Campus Living supports students living on-campus and can facilitate various processes, including the assignment of roommates and switching of rooms.
21. Veteran and military student services (Room 5226, [email protected])
Veteran and Military Student Services offer veterans and other military-associated students support, such as helping veterans adjust to civilian life.
