For those weary students who needed a quick snack or a refreshing game, the Taiwanese Night Market event may have been the cure.
The event on the rainy evening of Feb. 20 appealed to students who’d just finished classes or would shortly attend night classes. When students entered, they were handed two tickets — unless they signed in beforehand, in which case they were handed four. These tickets were then used to redeem a small serving of food per ticket from the various stalls around. Vendors served dishes born in Taiwan, the Philippines, Hawaii, China, and Korea, from sweets like shaved ice and ice cream tea to savory meals like fish meatballs and dumplings.
With such a variety of things to eat and only two or four tickets per person, one may wonder what to spend their tickets on. Instead of or in addition to deciding between the delicacies, students could play a variety of minigames including a bottle ring toss, mahjong bingo, and a game where you shoot targets with a gun made from sticks and rubber bands.
This short yet sweet and savory event was extremely enjoyable to students; almost all students interviewed reported food as the reason why they visited. If they decide to host another event such as this one, it will likely be another sensation.
