Applying to university involves more than just submitting grades. Most applications also require recommendation letters and a personal statement. But what exactly is a personal statement?
A personal statement is a narrative essay that illustrates key features of your academic and personal journey. Since this can play a big role in shaping our futures, it’s understandable to feel pressure while writing one.
Shoreline Community College has organized a workshop specifically for transfer students. The workshop aims to boost confidence and prepare students for admission and scholarship applications by teaching essential skills: effective preparation, adherence to guidelines, standing out, understanding your audience, and crafting paragraphs with a smooth flow.
While three of the sessions have already taken place, there’s still time to register for the final workshop on Feb. 5 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Students can attend either in person or online. While a University of Washington prompt is used as a starting point, participants are encouraged to bring prompts from other universities or scholarships they’re pursuing.
Writing takes time, especially when the essay is so relevant to your future. If you’re unable to attend the workshop or need extra help, the Student Learning Center and The Writing Studio are always available to assist with specific sections of your personal statement or essay. Just bring your questions, and staff will guide you through the process.
Feeling overwhelmed by the application process? Don’t miss these opportunities to prepare!
