Ever wonder why a few buildings that previously hosted classes have been fenced off and reduced to dirt? There is a simple explanation to this rubble; the new Cedar Building, a building that serves a variety of science classes. The building has already experienced a soft opening and is hosting classes and in doing so is currently available for student entry. However, its official grand opening has been slated for 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2024.
The Cedar building retains up to date tools required for advanced lab and manufacturing techniques. According to a Mission Fulfillment and Sustainability Report published by SCC in 2020, “It replaces previous buildings that hosted dental hygiene and manufacturing programs as well as classrooms for STEM classes such as biology, chemistry, and engineering”. The building previously went by the name Health Sciences & Advanced Manufacturing Classroom Complex (HSMACC). The name change to Cedar was done with aid from the Associated Student Government (ASG) and indigenous representatives. The name Cedar was meant to honor the native plant habitat as well as local tribes.
The building was constructed with environmental impact in mind and was granted a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Construction and the subsequent opening date have been delayed multiple times. After much expectation the building will finally get the adequate attention it deserves on May 2, 2024 during its grand opening. Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Marketing, Cat Chiappa, and Executive Director of Advancement and Foundation, Wendy Coates, are forming an organizational committee to ensure that the event is a success. More information regarding the grand opening will be reported as the official date approaches.
