Tiger Cheng has officially been elected as Shoreline Community College’s next ASG President, following a final-round vote against fellow candidate Jayna Goh. The online voting ran from May 19 to May 23, after no candidate secured a majority in the initial round earlier this spring.
The Associated Student Government (ASG) at Shoreline includes 11 student leaders who represent the student body and help shape campus life. The ASG President leads the board, collaborates with college administration, and plays a key role in supporting student clubs and programs. From hosting meetings to advocating for student needs, the president ensures students are heard and supported year-round.
Cheng’s Vision for Shoreline
A psychology major from Hong Kong, Cheng believes in turning setbacks into motivation—drawing inspiration from his experience as a long-distance runner who once finished dead last but never gave up. “Messing up is okay. Giving up isn’t,” he said.
Now in his second year at Shoreline, Cheng plans to bring that same “progress over perfection” mindset into student government. His campaign emphasized practical support systems to help students feel more connected and heard. Ideas include a “Study Buddy Wall” for late-night learners, a peer mentoring group called the “Shark Support Squad,” and feedback kiosks for easily sharing concerns and ideas.
Cheng believes action speaks louder than words. “My strength is turning human insight into action,” he said. He credits his father’s advice for shaping his leadership style—focused on helping others thrive rather than seeking the spotlight. As ASG President, Cheng says he’s ready to listen, act, and build a campus where no student has to navigate college alone.
A Closer Look at Jayna Goh
Also in the running was Jayna Goh, a Film and Acting major from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She focused her campaign on connection, inclusion, and mental health support. Drawing from her own experience as an international student adjusting to life far from home, she aimed to help others feel seen and supported. “I believe Shoreline deserves a president who brings people together, speaks up for everyone, and makes sure you feel seen and heard,” she said.
From Promise to Action
With voting now closed and the results confirmed, Cheng says he’s ready to get to work. “For me, this isn’t just a position—it’s a promise,” he wrote in a message. “Humbled by your trust, energized by our shared vision. My first act is simple: I will listen.”
He emphasized that student voices will guide his leadership as ASG President. “From every corner of Shoreline, your voice will shape our action; your needs will drive our change. I believe together we can build the college experience you deserve.”
His guiding message? “Begun by listening, bonded by action. Your voice, our mission.”
