After a fun and exciting two months filled with many school events, the fall quarter has finally come to a close. With it, the curtain rises to reveal a heart-wrenching predicament that fills many SCC students’ hearts with terror: final exams. With that in mind, the ISL has organized an event to lend a helping hand to students in these trying times. The Ebbtide sought out students’ thoughts on finals and the study tactics they use.
The event, “Study Time with ISL”, was held inside the Quiet Dining Room, PUB. It went down exactly as the headline stated: a non-formal and chill study hangout session with the ISL. The students could prepare themselves for the finals, seek academic assistance, or just relax and connect with new faces—the choice was yours.
In the room, they had set out two bags each of Kopiko and White Rabbit candy on a table, allowing students to treat themselves and savor sweets whilst studying. On top of that, an assortment of beverages—instant milk tea, instant barley tea, and chamomile tea—were also provided for the students to complement the sweets.
ISL member Josiah Ophaskiatikal, a sophomore student from Thailand, when asked how he was feeling about the finals, replied, “A little bit nervous, but I think I’m okay with most of the subjects.”
Ophaskiatikal shared his main method to help him study more effectively: the Tutoring Center. “I go to the tutor center a lot because I have a lot of questions and the tutors can help me,” he said.
Nanami Yoshisda, a student from Japan who also works for the ISL shared her technique, “I use a Pomodoro timer on YouTube which has like a 30 minutes timer plus a 10 minutes break. So [a] total 40 minutes, and I just do that over and over.”
Other methods Yoshida uses to help her focus on studying are taking power naps or walking in nature to take her mind off work. She says she does this because it refreshes her mind.
When asked about the motives behind the Study Time with ISL event, Ophaskiatikal said, “It was organized to motivate students to study together. As it’s mentioned,” he added, “it was made [for students] to make new friends and prepare for the finals.”
Good luck on your finals.
