Shoreline Community College hosted an event held at the PUB Courtyard on Wednesday, April 23, from 11.00 AM to 2.00 PM as part of its annual Earth Week celebration.
This event is hosted not just by Student Life but also aided by local organizations in Seattle YMCA, City of Shoreline, Beacon Food Forest, EarthCorps, NW Energy Coalition, and WA Water Trails. They help promote and spread awareness of the environment, additionally offering volunteer opportunities and potential job opportunities to those who are interested.
Gabe, the representative of EarthCorps said, “We’re here to kind of just promote the work that we do. Like I said, we kind of have some volunteer events. That’s what a really great way for community members to engage with a sort of stewarding of the earth. Then we also wanted to talk a little bit about some of the job opportunities that we have, if folks are looking for careers. You are in the environmental field after college or after higher education.”
There are also activities such as Plant adoption, where you have the opportunity to adopt a plant and raise it. Additionally, mushroom kits are available where people can have the opportunity to grow their own edible mushroom plants to eat. Attendees have the chance to win a couple of prizes and snacks for answering the correct question on recycling and sustainability questions.
“We are trying to provide something that people can do at home. So like, hey, grow their own mushrooms. Basically, these are edible mushrooms you can eat. and cook. I mean, we want to provide that and show people the things that we can actually do. And for people to eat, try something, and learn some stuff,” said Grumeet Singh Basla, who was providing information regarding the mushroom kit.
Standon, a student, said,” I think it is a pretty nice thing to walk into. I didn’t think that it was going on today because I’m not here often. But it was cool, there were snacks, a mushroom kit, which I was really happy about, and then just a lot of like good information that I think uh more people should know about it.”
The Earth Week event was a really interesting event, as not only did students have the opportunity to explore opportunities in helping the environment, but they also could contribute to the environment, such as the mushroom growing kit and plant adoption stalls that were provided.
