Employers in a diverse variety of fields ranging from law enforcement and government to technology and social services were invited to the PUB main dining room last Tuesday, to offer a wealth of opportunities for SCC students planning their post-college lives.
“As a student, it’s important to know your future career [and] if the opportunities that you are going to get from each company match your career dream,” said business student Mourad Saissi.
Ami Noda, a business student, found that, “There are not a lot of opportunities to talk with people who actually work in my field, so I think we can talk to them and get ready for the future.”
“We are just here to get people opportunities,” said Lieutenant Daniel Stites of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
Marketing student Kai Cheng Liao told us briefly about his experience at the event, emphasizing, “They were really helpful, love those people.”
In addition to meeting potential future employers, job seekers learned one way to make better first impressions through “headshots” — personal marketing photos taken from the neck up. Professional photographer Lara Grauer, with makeup and hairstyle staff on hand, provided for free to a lucky few, these expensive resumé and LinkedIn profile centerpieces.
The event, held on Tue. May 21, offered additional resources for students who need non-employment-related support, along with drinks and snacks.
Megan Tucker, Career Center manager and one of the event organizers, explained the main objective of the event and how it benefits the students she works with, “They bring a lot of life experiences to work and it’s really important for me and for the college to be able to provide opportunities so the students can see themselves working in a variety [of] different places.”
With all these reports, we can say that it was a productive day, with several students leaving with a broader view of the opportunities and with some prizes in hand too. The companies and all the staff put a lot of effort into making this happen for us.
