Shoreline Community College’s annual Halloween Party, a delightfully spooky celebration organized by International Student Leaders, began at 6 p.m. in the main dining room of the PUB on Oct. 25.
20 volunteers decorated the venue, checked attendees in, served food, and kept things tidy, eventually receiving commendatory certificates at the end of their shifts. Volunteer Adelya Yeskendirova said her experience was “spooky and fun, as Halloween should be. It was nice meeting new people and spending time with them.”
The event required over a month of preparation, in which International Student Leaders ordered decorations and selected volunteers from a pool of small applicant essays. A costume contest, toilet paper-wrapping competition, and various dance performances from the Pop Dance Society comprised the party’s attractions, and catering included Korean cuisine and pumpkin pies for dessert.
Objects that could be mistaken for a weapon in the dark were prohibited. Additionally, students and permitted non-student plus ones were required to identify themselves and their costumes at the front desk.
Some members of Shoreline’s faculty attended the party and donned costumes including a cat, witch, and cowboy. One of the most beloved costumes among students was a group of inflatable dinosaurs, who cheerfully fought one another with plastic lightsabers.
The party concluded at 9 p.m. with a disco and the announcement of the costume contest’s winner. International Student Leaders photographed all of the participants and encouraged guests to vote. The best costume, according to the voters, was Hugo Richman’s demonic horned creature with two heads.
