The 50th Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF)was held in part at the Shoreline Community College Theater from May 9 to May 19. This year’s festival featured 24 in-person screenings, showcasing approximately two films each day.
“Música!” was one of my favorite films of the festival. “Música!” is a captivating documentary directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. The film looks into the lives of students at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory of Music in Cuba. More than just a story about music, “Música!” explores resilience, passion, and the indomitable spirit of young musicians facing adversity.
The narrative begins with Horns for Havana, a non-profit organization that has been instrumental in supporting the students of Amadeo Roldán. For over a decade, this organization has supplied instruments and music supplies to the conservatory, offering a lifeline to students whose education has been severely impacted by decades of sociopolitical instability and embargoes. A crucial component of the conservatory’s survival is the workshop established by Horns for Havana, providing essential instrument repair services in a place where local shops are nonexistent. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has severely disrupted this service, further challenging the students’ perseverance.
“Música!” is focusing on four dedicated students: Lily, Kevin, Rodrigo, and Darianna. Through their stories, the film vividly depicts the obstacles and triumphs they face on their musical journeys. Lily is a talented double bass player, Kevin is a trumpet player, Rodrigo is a pianist, and Darianna is a cellist. The documentary delves into the essence of jazz, showcasing its ability to transcend language and social barriers. The students’ passion for jazz is palpable, and their determination to keep the music alive is profoundly inspiring.
A highlight of their journey is their performance in New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, marking a significant and transformative experience. This was their first time traveling to another country. They learned valuable tips from local jazz musicians, even though they speak different languages. They can understand each other through the music. This magical trip improved their performance and boosted their confidence for their future music careers.
In the end of the film, Lily embarks on a trip to Florida with her childhood friends to continue her musical career. Trumpeter Kevin and pianist Rodrigo remain in Cuba, leaving a lasting impact on the local music scene. Darianna, who goes on to earn an MFA from the University of Michigan, exemplifies the global reach of their talent and dedication.
“Música!” is more than just a documentary about music. It is a profound exploration of hope, determination, and the transformative power of art in the face of adversity. The film perfectly captures the spirit of young musicians who, despite facing tremendous challenges, continue to pursue their passions and inspire others.
