The Ebbtide won seven awards and one honorable mention at the 2020 Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators (PNAJE) contest.
As a publication, The Ebbtide won second place for Best Website. The judges pointed specifically to the paper’s “strong and rare editorial leadership.”
Editor-in-Chief Nova Clark won a third place award in Page Design for a print spread that featured an opinion piece written by News Editor Juan Páez.
Páez and Copy Editor Joshua Groom won first place in Comprehensive Coverage for their yearlong investigative reporting on SCC’s budget crisis.
Additionally, Groom won second place in Comprehensive Coverage for his extensive coverage of SCC’s Dental Hygiene program. He also took first place in Reviews for a critique of Ronan Farrow’s “Catch and Kill.”
Sports Editor Ed Strong won first place in Sports News Reporting for his coverage of SCC’s Men’s soccer. He also earned an honorable mention for Sports Feature Reporting in response to his profile on Terrell Brown.
Staff Writer Travis Tribble won third place in Feature Reporting for his article “From Plato’s Cave to Google’s Cubicle.”
PNAJE accepts entries from community college student publications in Washington state, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. This year, the contest received 279 submissions from student journalists across that five state area.
